About Us
Houseboat Owners Association of Sunamganj was established in 2023 with a vision to organize, regulate, and promote the thriving houseboat tourism sector in Sunamganj, one of Bangladesh’s most scenic and ecologically important travel destinations. The Association is a collective body of 94 responsible, safety-conscious, and service-oriented houseboat owners, working to elevate the standard of tourism while preserving the local culture and environment.
We are proud to be approved or under the process of approval by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), the Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj, and local government authorities. This recognition ensures our activities follow national regulations and contribute to sustainable, safe tourism.
Who We Are
While Sunamganj currently has around 200 tourism boats, only the 94 houseboats under our Association are officially recognized and fully compliant with government safety and operational standards. Our members operate the most modern, legally registered, and eco-conscious houseboats in the region.
Our Mission
To ensure a safe, enjoyable, and sustainable houseboat experience while promoting local livelihoods and responsible tourism practices in Sunamganj.
Our Activities
Community-Based Tourism: We strongly promote community engagement in tourism. From sourcing food and supplies from local markets to hiring local crews, cooks, and guides—our operations directly benefit the people of Sunamganj.
Employment Generation: Each houseboat creates multiple employment opportunities. With 94+ boats, the Association supports over 1,000+ local jobs/ Business including boat operators, hospitality staff, shop, tour guides, and maintenance teams.
Strengthening the Local Economy: Tourists using our houseboats contribute significantly to local haat bazaars, transport services, and other small businesses, stimulating grassroots economic growth.
Training & Skill Development: We organize regular training for boat crews in hospitality, safety, and environmental protection, ensuring professional service and community empowerment.
Tourist Support Services: Our helpdesks and digital platforms assist tourists in choosing safe, registered boats and navigating their journey in the Tanguar Haor area.
Policy Advocacy & Legal Guidance: We engage with local and national authorities to improve regulation, infrastructure, and awareness for sustainable tourism.
